1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "What is it?" said Carrie.
2. Mrs. Hale, from her upper window, saw her come in.
3. "How large is New York?" she asked.
4. "I thought I had you," he said, weakly.
5. "Why, no," said Carrie. "Of course I didn't."
6. On the fourth day she was down town all day, having borrowed tencents for lunch from Minnie. She had applied in the cheapestkind of places without success. She even answered for a waitressin a small restaurant where she saw a card in the window, butthey wanted an experienced girl. She moved through the thickthrong of strangers, utterly subdued in spirit. Suddenly a handpulled her arm and turned her about.

1. He walked away to listen to Bamberger, who was feebly spoutingsome ardent line.
2. For another thing, Hurstwood missed the celebrities--those well-dressed, elite individuals who lend grace to the average bars andbring news from far-off and exclusive circles. He did not seeone such in a month. Evenings, when still at his post, he wouldoccasionally read in the evening papers incidents concerningcelebrities whom he knew--whom he had drunk a glass with many atime. They would visit a bar like Fitzgerald and Moy's inChicago, or the Hoffman House, uptown, but he knew that he wouldnever see them down here.Again, the business did not pay as well as he thought. Itincreased a little, but he found he would have to watch hishousehold expenses, which was humiliating.
3. "You said I did real well in Chicago," she rejoined.
4. He smiled and went lightly away. Carrie was thoroughlyimpressed. She had never come in contact with such grace. Asfor Drouet, he was equally pleased.
5. "What are you up to?" he inquired genially, turning a smilingface upon his secret brother.
6. They drove back, and at 6.15 sat down to dine. It was the Sherryincident over again, the remembrance of which came painfully backto Carrie. She remembered Mrs. Vance, who had never called againafter Hurstwood's reception, and Ames.

1. "Got an appointment with him?"
2. "Why don't you tell me all about this thing," he said, after atime, "and let's call it off? You don't really care forHurstwood, do you?"
3. "Well, you get it then," he said grimly, though in a modifiedtone of voice.
4. On Saturday she paid another four dollars and pocketed her fiftycents in despair. The speaking acquaintanceship which she formedwith some of the girls at the shop discovered to her the factthat they had more of their earnings to use for themselves thanshe did. They had young men of the kind whom she, since herexperience with Drouet, felt above, who took them about. Shecame to thoroughly dislike the light-headed young fellows of theshop. Not one of them had a show of refinement. She saw onlytheir workday side.
5. Mrs. Morgan read this rather flatly, and the director was indespair. He fidgeted around, and then went over to Mr. Quincel.
6. It was a quarter after four when he left the house. Carrie wasin tears. There would be no dinner that night.

1. "Oh, stop!" said Carrie."Well, I'll not be made a fool of," exclaimed Drouet. "You maytrifle around with him if you want to, but you can't lead me.You can tell me or not, just as you want to, but I won't fool anylonger!"
2. The immediate result of this was nothing. Results from suchthings are usually long in growing. Morning brings a change offeeling. The existent condition invariably pleads for itself. It is only at odd moments that we get glimpses of the misery ofthings. The heart understands when it is confronted withcontrasts. Take them away and the ache subsides.
3. Carrie smiled again. She felt the acuteness of Hurstwood'sposition, and wished deeply that she could be alone with him, butshe did not understand the change in Drouet. Hurstwood foundthat he could not talk, repressed as he was, and grudging Drouetevery moment of his presence, he bowed himself out with theelegance of a Faust. Outside he set his teeth with envy.
4、 "Mrs. George Wheeler," said Carrie, moving over to where she waswriting. The woman wrote her address in full and then allowedher to depart at her leisure.
5、 "I wonder what's getting into me, anyhow?" he said.

{ Once during the day, when he sat near the radiator, hunched upand reading, she passed through, and seeing him, wrinkled herbrows. In the front room, where it was not so warm, she sat bythe window and cried. This was the life cut out for her, was it?To live cooped up in a small flat with some one who was out ofwork, idle, and indifferent to her. She was merely a servant tohim now, nothing more.

Of course, as his own self-respect vanished, it perished for himin Carrie. She could not understand what had gotten into theman. He had some money, he had a decent suit remaining, he wasnot bad looking when dressed up. She did not forget her owndifficult struggle in Chicago, but she did not forget either thatshe had never ceased trying. He never tried. He did not evenconsult the ads in the papers any more.
