3. "My dear Mycroft, the brother's life is more valuable than thesister's story. I think we should call at Scotland Yard forInspector Gregson and go straight out to Beckenham. We know that a manis being done to death, and every hour may be vital."
4. So those were the facts about Killer Evans and his remarkableinvention of the three Garridebs. We heard later that our poor oldfriend never got over the shock of his dissipated dreams. When hiscastle in the air fell down, it buried him beneath the ruins. He waslast heard of at a nursing-home in Brixton. It was a glad day at theYard when the Prescott outfit was discovered, for, though they knewthat it existed, they had never been able, after the death of the man,to find out where it was. Evans had indeed done great service andcaused several worthy C.I.D. men to sleep the sounder, for thecounterfeiter stands in a class by himself as a public danger. Theywould willingly have subscribed to that soup-plate medal of whichthe criminal had spoken, but an unappreciative bench took a lessfavourable view, ind the Killer returned to those shades from which hehad just emerged.
5. "So much so," I remarked, "that of the last six cases which Ihave added to my notes, three have been entirely free of any legalcrime."
6. "Then put on your hat and come. I am going through the Cityfirst, and we can have some lunch on the way. I observe thatthere is a good deal of German music on the programme, which israther more to my taste than Italian or French. It is

1. "Pooh! All that is clear enough," said Holmes impatiently. "It isthis last sudden move."
2. "'If you really mean it, of course you shall have the money,' saidI.

4. "He is the Napoleon of crime, Watson. He is the organizer of halfthat is evil and of nearly all that is undetected in this greatcity. He is a genius, a philosopher, an abstract thinker. He has abrain of the first order. He sits motionless, like a spider in thecentre of its web, but that web has a thousand radiations, and heknows well every quiver of each of them. He does little himself Heonly plans. But his agents are numerous and splendidly organized. Isthere a crime to be done a paper to be abstracted, we will say, ahouse to be rifled, a man to be removed the word is passed to theprofessor, the matter is organized and carried out. The agent may becaught. In that case money is found for his bail or his defence. Butthe central power which uses the agent is never caught-never so muchas suspected. This was the organization which I deduced, Watson, andwhich I devoted my whole energy to exposing and breaking up."But the professor was fenced round with safeguards so cunninglydevised that, do what I would, it seemed impossible to get evidencewhich would convict in a court of law. You know my powers, my dearWatson, and yet at the end of three months I was forced to confessthat I had at last met an antagonist who was my intellectual equal. Myhorror at his crimes was lost in my admiration at his skill. But atlast he made a trip-only a little, little trip-but it was more than hecould afford, when I was so close upon him. I had my chance, and, starting from that point, I have woven my net round him until now itis all ready to close. In three days-that is to say, on Mondaynext-matters will be ripe, and the professor, with all the principalmembers of his gang, will be in the hands of the police. Then willcome the greatest criminal trial of the century, the clearing up ofover forty mysteries, and the rope for all of them; but if we moveat all prematurely, you understand, they may slip out of our handseven at the last moment.
5. "Did she drink before this estrangement?"
6. I was horrified by my first glimpse of Holmes next morning, for hesat by the fire holding his tiny hypodermic syringe. I associated thatinstrument with the single weakness of his nature, and I feared theworst when I saw it glittering in his hand. He laughed at myexpression of dismay and laid it upon the table.

1. "Any news, Mr. Holmes, any news?" he cried.
2. In the whirl of our incessant activity, it has often beendifficult for me, as the reader has probably observed, to round off mynarratives, and to give those final details which the curious mightexpect. Each case has been the prelude to another, and the crisis onceover, the actors have passed for ever out of our busy lives. I find, however, a short note at the end of my manuscript dealing with thiscase, in which I have put it upon record that Miss Violet Smith didindeed inherit a large fortune, and that she is now the wife ofCyril Morton, the senior partner of Morton & Kennedy, the famousWestminster electricians. Williamson and Woodley were both tried forabduction and assault, the former getting seven years the latterten. Of the fate of Carruthers, I have no record, but I am sure thathis assault was not viewed very gravely by the court, since Woodleyhad the reputation of being a most dangerous ruffian, and I think thata few, months were sufficient to satisfy the demands of justice.-THE END-
3. "And why did the tramp take nothing?"
4. "If this is a joke, sir, it is a very questionable one," said thevicar angrily. "I have never heard of the gentleman you name, and Ihave not sent a wire to anyone."

6. "It seemed that after we had left, Prendergast and his gang hadproceeded to put to death the five remaining prisoners. The twowarders had been shot and thrown overboard, and so also had thethird mate. Prendergast then descended into the 'tween-decks andwith his own hands cut the throat of the unfortunate surgeon. Thereonly remained the first mate, who was a bold and active man. When hesaw the convict approaching him with the bloody knife in his hand hekicked off his bonds, which he had somehow contrived to loosen, andrushing down the deck he plunged into the after-hold. A dozenconvicts, who descended with their pistols in search of him, found himwith a match-box in his hand seated beside an open powder-barrel,which was one of the hundred carried on board, and swearing that hewould blow all hands up if he were in any way molested. An instantlater the explosion occurred, though Hudson thought it was caused bythe misdirected bullet of one of the convicts rather than the mate'smatch. Be the cause what it may, it was the end of the Gloria Scottand of the rabble who held command of her.

1. "What would you do, then?"
2. "Yes, I will while away the morning at Godolphin Street with ourfriends of the regular establishment. With Eduardo Lucas lies thesolution of our problem, though I must admit that I have not aninkling as to what form it may take. It is a capital mistake totheorize in advance of the facts. Do you stay on guard, my goodWatson, and receive any fresh visitors. I'll join you at lunch if I amable."
3. "Did he get any letters?"
4、 With regard to our transaction, you will no doubt have observed bynow that one essential detail is missing. I have a tracing whichwill make it complete. This has involved me in extra trouble, however, and I must ask you for a further advance of five hundred pounds. Iwill not trust it to the post, nor will I take anything but gold ornotes. I would come to you abroad, but it would excite remark if Ileft the country at present. Therefore I shall expect to meet you inthe smoking-room of the Charing Cross Hotel at noon on Saturday.Remember that only English notes, or gold, will be taken. That will do very well. I shall be very much surprised if it doesnot fetch our man."

"I was slow at the outset- culpably slow. Had the body been found inthe water I could hardly have missed it. It was the towel which misledme. The poor fellow had never thought to dry himself, and so I in turnwas led to believe that he had never been in the water. Why, then, should the attack of any water creature suggest itself to me? That waswhere I went astray. Well, well, Inspector, I often ventured tochaff you gentlemen of the police force, but Cyanea capillata verynearly avenged Scotland Yard."

"Undoubtedly. I find that young Neligan arrived at the BrambletyeHotel on the very day of the crime. He came on the pretence of playinggolf. His room was on the ground-floor, and he could get out when heliked. That very night he went down to Woodman's Lee, saw PeterCarey at the hut, quarrelled with him, and killed him with theharpoon. Then, horrified by what he had done, he fled out of thehut, dropping the notebook which he had brought with him in order toquestion Peter Carey about these different securities. You may haveobserved that some of them were marked with ticks, and the others- thegreat majority- were not. Those which are ticked have been traced onthe London market, but the others, presumably, were still in thepossession of Carey, and young Neligan, according to his ownaccount, was anxious to recover them in order to do the right thing byhis father's creditors. After his flight he did not dare to approachthe hut again for some time, but at last he forced himself to do so inorder to obtain the information which he needed. Surely that is allsimple and obvious?"

{ "'So I know. Let me make the thing clear to you, for my own handis so strong that I can afford to show it. I have been fortunateenough to win the entire affection of this lady. This was given tome in spite of the fact that I told her very clearly of all theunhappy incidents in my past life. I also told her that certain wickedand designing persons- I hope you recognize yourself- would come toher and tell her these things, and I warned her how to treat them. Youhave heard of post-hypnotic suggestion, Mr. Holmes? Well, you will seehow it works, for a man of personality can use hypnotism without anyvulgar passes or tomfoolery. So she is ready for you and, I have nodoubt, would give you an appointment, for she is quite amenable to herfather's will- save only in the one little matter.'

Such was the remarkable narrative to which I listened on thatApril evening- a narrative which would have been utterly incredible tome had it not been confirmed by the actual sight of the tall, sparefigure and the keen, eager face, which I had never thought to seeagain. In some manner he had learned of my own sad bereavement, andhis sympathy was shown in his manner rather than in his words. "Workis the best antidote to sorrow, my dear Watson," said he; "and Ihave a piece of work for us both to-night which, if we can bring it toa successful conclusion, will in itself justify a man's life on thisplanet." In vain I begged him to tell me more. "You will hear andsee enough before morning," he answered. "We have three years of thepast to discuss. Let that suffice until half-past nine, when westart upon the notable adventure of the empty house."
