1.【址:a g 9 559⒐ v i p】1 "Why, I was just over there this afternoon--Mrs. Hale and I.Aren't they beautiful?"
2. Hurstwood smiled at the simple information.
3. Hurstwood was already there, sitting in his place.
4. The elevator door was open.
5. "I don't want to get out," said Hurstwood. "When I get readythere'll be nothing to stop me for."
6. Hurstwood hearkened without much mental comment. These talkersseemed scared to him. Their gabbling was feverish--things saidto quiet their own minds. He looked out into the yard andwaited.

计划指导

1. At a quarter after one in the morning he came out of the place. The chill, bare streets seemed a mockery of his state. He walkedslowly west, little thinking of his row with Carrie. He ascendedthe stairs and went into his room as if there had been notrouble. It was his loss that occupied his mind. Sitting downon the bedside he counted his money. There was now but a hundredand ninety dollars and some change. He put it up and began toundress.
2. Drouet was glad to do anything for relief. He fairly hustledaround to the side entrance, and was let in by the friendly door-keeper. Carrie was standing in the wings, weakly waiting hernext cue, all the snap and nerve gone out of her.
3. "Yes," said Mr. Kenny, and then, turning the word again added:"How are things out in Chicago?"
4. "I guess you find New York quite a thing to see, don't you?" saidCarrie, venturing something to avoid a possible deadly silence.
5. "I've had experience enough," said Hurstwood blandly, but he felta little diffident about referring to Fitzgerald and Moy.
6. Nevertheless, he started out. His clothes were very good and hisappearance still excellent, but it involved the trouble ofdeluding. People, looking at him, imagined instantly that a manof his age, stout and well dressed, must be well off. Heappeared a comfortable owner of something, a man from whom thecommon run of mortals could well expect gratuities. Being nowforty-three years of age, and comfortably built, walking was noteasy. He had not been used to exercise for many years. His legstired, his shoulders ached, and his feet pained him at the closeof the day, even when he took street cars in almost everydirection. The mere getting up and down, if long continued, produced this result.

推荐功能

1. "He hasn't talked to me about any of these later flames," thoughtHurstwood to himself. "He thinks I think he cares for the girlout there."
2. Through all this thoughts of Carrie flashed upon him, and theapproaching affair of Saturday. Tangled as all his matters were,he did not worry over that. It was the one pleasing thing inthis whole rout of trouble. He could arrange thatsatisfactorily, for Carrie would be glad to wait, if necessary. He would see how things turned out to-morrow, and then he wouldtalk to her. They were going to meet as usual. He saw only herpretty face and neat figure and wondered why life was notarranged so that such joy as he found with her could be steadilymaintained. How much more pleasant it would be. Then he wouldtake up his wife's threat again, and the wrinkles and moisturewould return.
3. When these things would fall upon Drouet's ears, he wouldstraighten himself a little more stiffly and eat with solidcomfort. If he had any vanity, this augmented it, and if he hadany ambition, this stirred it. He would be able to flash a rollof greenbacks too some day. As it was, he could eat where THEYdid.
4. "She's been long getting round to it, hasn't she?" saidHurstwood, with a kind of sarcasm.
5. "I imagine I could get in," said Hurstwood significantly.
6. "Come around," he said, "the first of next week. I may make somechanges then."

应用

1. "The fool!" he said, now hating Drouet. "The idiot! I'll do himyet, and that quick! We'll see to-morrow."
2. "On the trolley lines?" said Carrie, astonished.
3. "It is, eh?" exclaimed the big comedian. "She killed my hand allright. I'm not going to stand that."
4、 "Yes, we whipped them out over there without much trouble."
5、 "I think I must have left spots on some of them," said the other.

And yet she was not without thoughts which were disturbing. Whatdid he know? What had Drouet told him? Was she a wife in hiseyes, or what? Would he marry her? Even while he talked, and shesoftened, and her eyes were lighted with a tender glow, she wasasking herself if Drouet had told him they were not married. There was never anything at all convincing about what Drouetsaid.
